Two particularly interesting cars are coming up for new ownership. What might appear to be a rather nondescript 1980 V6 automatic Notchback Mustang, comes from the Peterson Automotive Museum. The original owner is film legend, Bette Davis.
According to the Museum, the tale of this Mustang began on April 5, 1980 - Ms. Davis' 72nd birthday. Ms. Davis phoned Crenshaw Motors in Los Angeles and said, "This is Bette Davis. I would like to order an American car. A Ford Mustang. Black with red interior. Please make it a 2-door hardtop. Not a convertible. I will have my attorney, Harold Schiff, phone you for details. Thank you."
This Mustang, in all its glory, comes with its original documentation: sales receipts, correspondence, owner I.D. Cards and original license plates. There have been only two owners of this automobile, Ms. Davis and her personal assistant, Kathryn Sermak. It has been on display for the past seven years at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.
Shelby afficianados will be circling in the sky for Lot #819 to be driven onto the auction platform. This 1949 MG TC roadster is first car that Carroll Shelby drove in a road race - the car that started his racing career.
In May of 1952, his good friend Ed Wilkins let Carroll Shelby drive this MG TC in a road race at Norman, Oklahoma. It was Shelby's first sport car race. He won it, and the second race, too, easily outrunning the Jaguar XK120's. That race and this car changed the course of his life.
This vintage race car has been part of the famous Syd Silverman Collection for the past 20+ years and is well-known throughout the MG vintage race car circuit. Obviously, this car represents a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own an important piece of automotive history. Bidding should be brisk.
The auction catalog also contains a number of collector-grade Mustangs that will be auctioned during the Saturday session. The expected roster of BOSS's, Mach's and CobraJet's are present, but don't necessarily have the panache of these two examples.
