Record Attempt Stymied by Blown Tire

Brent Hajek's Mustang has come a long way in a short time. The Ames, OK, native has been involved with Fords and racing since the 1970's and had the recent distinction of being the first to take delivery of a Ford Racing FR500CJ Mustang.

That car was not destined to become a museum piece - far from it. "It all changed when I first saw the Mustang FR500C," said Hajek. "That car was amazing and it really got me thinking about how we could really accomplish some cool things if we put our minds to it."

Last August, he took the E-85 converted Mustang FR500CJ to the Bonneville Salt Flats in search of the land speed record for an Ethanol powered car. Forced to run in the unlimited fuel class, his E-85 Ethanol powered Mustang posted an initial run of over 252 mph. A mechanical failure disallowed the team from making the validation run, but the first run earned their car the unofficial designation - by some - as the ‘fastest production Mustang on earth.’

More recently, Hajek brought his E-85 Mustang FR500C to Talladega Superspeedway for Bill Elliott to establish a closed course speed mark for an E-85 powered car. Elliott was able to establish a USAC-certified E-85 mark of 174.206 mph in just two timed laps. Prior to the Talledega attempt, the car turned out a dyno run of over 800 RWHP at Elliot's shop.

Unfortunately, while still doing preliminary shake down runs, a cut right front tire on Elliott's third lap spun the Mustang FR500C into the Turn 2 wall and the Hajek Motorsport car sustained significant suspension and right-side damage, significant enough that the rest of the E-85 speed test was cancelled.

"We were able to set the E-85 record in just a couple of laps and Bill was on a real flyer when he cut a tire," said Hajek. "There simply isn’t enough time to fix the car in the limited time frame that everyone has to complete this test."

"I wish I could tell you what happened," said Elliott who ran a NASCR qualifying record with a lap of 212.809 mph at Talladega in 1987. "It was one of those things where you get that shake and you know what is coming, but there is nothing you can do about it."

Given the spirit and determination of the Hajek Motorsports' team, this isn't the last that you'll hear of this particular Mustang.
