We'll know soon enough if this is all phooey or not. Those rumors also suggest that Ford will present a concept version at the upcoming 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show later this year.
If a European Capri were to be produced, it would certainly be a front wheel drive car, likely falling in between the Focus and Mondeo as far as size goes. Early powertrain choices could be limited to existing combinations, but a future RS version could be possible. The 300 HP motor from the current Focus RS might make this a reasonable performer.
OK, so all this is pleasant speculation as far as the Euro market goes and might get the juices flowing in old-time Capri enthusiasts, but what is the relevance for local Mustang owners? Well, is this one possible basis for a future North American Mustang? yes, purists may scream and jump up and down, but
the screws have never been tighter on Ford Motor Company.
We have previously reported Ford executive comments that suggest the current Mustang paradigm will not continue forever, and that things will have to change well before 2020.
When future choices have to be made, this might one that is considered. Things will become clearer in Frankfurt.
