Mustang Racing at Homestead Miami
Mustang Racing Begins with a Bang

by CP Staff

Fans of road racing Mustangs will get their fill this coming weekend as two competition series converge on Homestead Miami Speedway.

A double header is in the cards for the opening rounds of The Mustang Challenge series, now entering its second season. Series champion, Andrew Caddell of Graham, WA, returns under the Kaufmann Racing flag, while 17 other entries will ensure plenty of wheel-to-wheel action. Friday will bring qualifying action in a single, 15-minute session, with races on both Saturday and Sunday.

The Mustang Challenge is an affordable, challenging platform for racers who want to compete in a V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive car on a level playing field that showcases driver ability in high-profile events. Co-developed by Ford Racing and Miller Motorsports Park and sanctioned by the Grand American Road Racing Association, the Mustang Challenge series is a support series to major professional road racing events across North America.

Round 2 of the Grand Am Koni Sports Car Challenge brings 60 competitors (28 GS, 32 ST) to the 2.3-mile, 11-turn speedway road course. Each class will run in a seperate event. The ST race is on Saturday and GS cars run on Sunday.

The opening round of the series at Daytona saw a close finish, with Mustang FR500C entries taking three of the top five spots. The relatively high speed track at Homestead favors the V8 cars overall, but seasoned BMW M3 and Porsche 997 entrants cannot be easily discounted.

The Koni Sports Car Challenge is Grand-Am's showcase for the latest in international and American-made high-performance sports cars, coupes and sedans, straight from the showroom with only safety and limited performance modifications.

THe Homestead event is also a Grand-Am Fan Appreciation Weekend with complimentary tickets and free parking available. TIckets can be obtained by visiting the Grand Am website. The voucher may be reproduced as many times as needed to take the entire family and friends to the event. Tickets sold at the gate will be $10 each.

The weekend will also feature full access to the garage and paddock areas, interaction with drivers and teams, access to the grid prior to the Koni Challenge races, and a cavalcade of special events and activities all weekend long, including talks and garage tours, tire and shock absorber presentations, pit-stop demonstrations and a whole section of the facility set up for car clubs and exotic car displays.
