DIY: V-6 Facelift

If you wanted to get the GT-style foglamps for your 2005+ Mustang, the job was going to be expensive. The V-6 bumper fascia is different from that on the GT model, so not only did you need the grille, fog lamps, wiring and bumper cover, you also needed to have a paint shop do their thing as well.

Now, some enterprising individuals have figured out just how to tweak the GT grille to fit, but the cutting, grinding and sanding may be beyond some owner's abilities or patience level. To resolve this issue and still deliver an OEM quality installation, Street Scene Equipment has come to the rescue.

Street Scene has made a grille replacement for the V6 pony that uses all of the original mounting locations and allows fitment of factory fog lamps. The company also supplies the needed wiring to complete the job without butchering the original wiring harness.

Follow along with us, as we work with Street Scene technicians to update this pony's already good looks.

Locate and then pry up on the center pin of six plastic fasteners that secure the cover panel to the rad support and body. These are not screws, so you may need to use a knife blade or thin screwdriver blade to get the pins out. Save the hardware for reuse.

With the cover panel off, you can remove the grille assembly. It is just held by a number of locating tabs at this point.

Wiring for the fog lamps is the most challenging part. Start at the fuse box and connect the supplied relay to the bolt indicated in the photo, making sure that the plug connection is facing down. Drilling the hole in the relay tab out to 1/4" does make things go more smoothly.

Run the power wire (red with an inline fuse) to the fuse box, on the side where the battery cable enters. Connect the wire to the terminal as shown above.

Now, run the harness under the radiator support and across the front of the car. Route the fog lamp plugs to the front also.

Connect the ground wire (black with ring terminal) to the ground bolt on the rad support.

Route the remaining harness along the driver's side fender. Use the supplied cable ties to secure the harness to the hood release cable.

Now, go inside the car and find a rubber boot on the firewall, to the left of the brake pedal. Pull the boot out and cut a small "X" in the flat portion of the rubber. From under the hood, route the harness down and through the hole where the boot was. Get back inside and pull the harness through the X-cut and replace the boot in the firewall. Take some time to ensure that it is properly sealed all around. You might want to add some silicone sealer around the harness and X-cut as well.

Next, remove the headlamp switch from the dash panel. You will need to pry up on the bottom of the switch to get it out. Wrap some cloth around a small, flat blade screwdriver and be careful not to scratch the dash. You can see the clips that snap in to hold the switch, in the photo. Route the harness wiring up into the cavity in the dash. Unplug the switch assembly from the wiring.

Carefully drill a hole in the switch bezel, as shown, to accept the supplied toggle switch. A 51/64" or 20mm hole saw or drill bit is best. Drill a pilot hole first. If necessary, you can use a 3/4" hole saw or drill bit and then enlarge the hole slightly with a file. Work carefully here, so that the switch will fit tightly and maintain a clean appearance.

Install the toggle switch in the hole. Note the orientation from the photo.

Plug the headlamp switch back into the OEM wiring, then plug the Street Scene connector into their toggle switch. Unwrap the black tape from the OEM headlight connector and locate the RED/WHITE stripe wire. Use the supplied quick splice connector to connect this wire and the red wire in the Screet Scene harness. Do NOT cut any wires.

Snap the headlight switch back into the dash panel. Use the supplied cable ties to secure the wiring under the dash, being sure that there is no interference with the hood release. Assemble the fog lights and grille per the supplied instructions and install. Connect the fog lights to their connectors and test for correct operation.
